Massimo Gasparon is the Director of ERMA – the European Raw Materials Alliance (erma.eu) at EIT RawMaterials, a key European actor established in 2015 to advance Europe’s transition into a sustainable economy initiated and co-funded by the European Union through the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology). ERMA’s goal is to secure the supply of sustainable raw materials for Europe’s industrial ecosystems. He coordinates the activities of 1,500+ stakeholders and an investment portfolio of more than 14 billion euros. He holds a PhD in geochemistry from the University of Tasmania and prior to joining EIT RawMaterials in 2017 he was a professor in the School of Earth Sciences at The University of Queensland.
Between 1995 and 2013 he coordinated several programs aimed at establishing human impacts at research stations in the Australian Antarctic Territory on behalf of the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. His research has focused on the assessment of risk to the environment and to human health, particularly at mine sites, following exposure to air, water and soil contaminated with metals and metalloids. He is the co-author of over 100 scientific publications, a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and a Professorial Fellow at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Between 2006 and 2015 he won several state and national Awards for Teaching Excellence.
